Garden railway sleepers and raised beds make for a stylish addition to any outdoor living space. A great alternative to using brick or stone, these additions can create focal areas with natural textures and tones to complement your garden. Our sets of timber sleepers come in neutral materials, including treated pine, softwood, and British larch. Garden sleepers are made for durability, but we recommend some simple maintenance to get the most out of your timber, such as a coat of decking stain or oil to help prevent splitting and rot.
And by putting your plants in a raised bed with the right compost and topsoil, you can enjoy regulated growth. Whether you’re looking to brighten things up on the patio or plant a fragrant herb garden, enjoy advanced protection from the elements when you choose a sleeper or raised bed.

FAQs
What are garden sleepers and what are they used for?
Garden sleepers are large, rectangular pieces of wood (sometimes concrete) that are used in landscaping and gardening. They’re primarily used to create raised beds, or retain walls, steps, or edging in outdoor spaces. Sleepers can add structure and visual interest to a garden while also providing practical functionality.
How long do garden sleepers last?
The lifespan of garden sleepers depends on the material used and the maintenance provided. Treated wooden sleepers can last up to 20 years or more, while hardwood sleepers can last even longer. Concrete railway sleepers are highly durable and can last for several decades though they come with a higher price tag and are more typically used in construction and as their name gives away, on railways.
How do you protect garden sleepers?
To extend their lifespan, it's recommended to regularly inspect sleepers for signs of damage, such as rot or cracks, and address any issues promptly. Applying a protective coating or sealant can also help preserve the appearance and integrity of wooden sleepers. You may also want to consider using a protective landscape membrane under the sleepers to protect them from ground moisture and prolong their lifespan.
How long is a railway sleeper?
In the UK, the standard length of railway sleepers is around 2.4 metres long, but they’re still available in other lengths to suit your needs and space.
How to fill a raised bed
It’s recommended the base be filled with coarse materials like branches and twigs, before adding a layer of compost or well-rotted manure before finally adding a quality mix of topsoil and compost, ready for plants to be added.
How deep should a raised bed be?
You should look for a raised bed depth of at least 15-30cm, perfect for herbs, salads and flowers. If you’re going to be planting vegetables with deep roots like carrots or potatoes, you should aim for 30-45cm or more for healthy root growth.
