To damp-proof your wooden shed, begin by laying a waterproof membrane, such as heavy-duty plastic sheeting, directly onto the ground beneath it. You’ll then want to raise the shed above it by placing it on wooden beams or concrete blocks to ensure airflow and prevent moisture build-up from the ground. For extra protection, install insulation for maximum peace of mind. Lastly, you’ll want to apply a weather-resistant sealant or paint to your shed’s floor for an extra barrier against moisture.
To insulate a timber shed, you’ll need thick materials such as rigid foam boards, fibreglass batts or reflective foil. Attach your chosen insulation to the inside of your shed’s frame before covering it with a moisture barrier to prevent moisture build-up. Next, cover the insulation with plywood or drywall for extra protection and an aesthetically pleasing interior finish. Always ensure all gaps are sealed to avoid unwanted drafts.
To stop condensation from forming in your wooden shed, we recommend adding vents or windows with a vapour barrier to improve your ventilation. This will prevent moisture from rising from the ground.
Wooden sheds are a popular choice for homeowners for their classic and rustic appearance, ideal for all garden styles, as well as their durability. They’re also versatile, with options to paint and stain them to match your outdoors, are easy to customise with hooks or shelving, and offer great insulation compared to other materials which protects items stored inside.
If you want to keep your timber shed in prime condition, you should:
- Apply a stain, paint or wood preservative every 1-3 years to protect it from all outdoor conditions.
- Regularly inspect the wood for signs of rot, mould or insect damage.
- Ensure all gutters are free from leaves and debris.
- Keep the indoors well-ventilated to minimise moisture build-up.
- Check roofing materials are in good condition and replace damaged areas if needed.
- Ensure the shed base remains level and prevent soil or plants from touching the wood.
- Make sure hinges, locks and fixings are all in working order – tighten if necessary.
By keeping on top of maintenance like this, you could extend your shed’s life by 15-25 years.
Wooden sheds offer a classic appearance, improved insulation and there’s more opportunity to customise them. On the other hand, plastic sheds are easier to maintain, naturally weather-resistant and are straightforward to erect. With that in mind, if you’re prioritising durability and aesthetics, opt for wood, or if you’re after convenience and minimal upkeep, go for plastic.
We recommend a 6x4 ft or 8x6 ft pressure-treated apex or pent shed that’s sturdy and doesn’t have windows. It should offer secure locking and build-in shelving options to keep your tools neatly organised.
